Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)
CS Design Studios is AMPing up to make the mobile experience better!
Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Program is designed to clean up the issues with browsing the web on your mobile device. 40% of users will drop off, or click out of a web page if it does not load within three seconds. This is a lose-lose situation for both users and web publishers which AMP aims to improve. Users expect speed, and Google has set out to accomplish speed across mobile devices once and for all.
AMP was born in an effort to improve mobile page loading speed. It is an open source project launched inside of Google to dramatically improve the performance of mobile sites on the web. AMP eliminates the frustrating issue of having a page’s text jump down as more images or advertisements load into view while you’re reading. AMP optimizes images, mobile experience, and content delivery all while improving website speed. The median load time for an AMP site is under one second, often creating a site load that appears instantaneous.
AMP is able to accomplish this by creating a simplified version of your website, which maintains the page content while stripping it of the things that slow it down. AMP utilizes traditional HTML pages but has a limited set of technical functionality allowed, which is why your site is able to load faster. Because AMP HTML is the same as regular HTML, this also means that the page does not have to be entirely re-coded in order to achieve faster speeds.
Speed matters for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons being that Google measures page bounce rates, which is the rate at which users exit the page or click back to search results after waiting too long for a page to load. If a site has a high bounce rate, it is less likely to be featured prominently on a Google search result page. Google considers user intent by pairing the searched for keywords and phrases with the fastest loading, most relevant results. Therefore, AMP compliant web pages will be displayed first. Google knows that a faster loading page means an overall better experience on the web. Fast loading content means the ability for faster reading and more consumption of content overall, which is good news for everyone involved.
